HANA encourages re-use with Creative Commons

The Highway Africa News Agency (HANA) decided to use the Creative Commons attribution no derivatives 2.0 licence to distribute their stories from their latest project in Accra. This enables other news organisations to distribute verbatim copies of the newspaper - even for commercial use. The paper, ‘WSIS Africa Agenda’ was distributed at the Accra meeting of African governments, civil society organisations and the private sector who were meeting to discuss regional preparations for the Tunis phase of the World Summit on the Information Society. There are some great articles on the politics of the African Information Society and insights into the role of different stakeholders in the WSIS process.

HANA is a news organisation with journalists from across the continent who cover ICT conferences and distribute news freely to media organisations that may not have the budget to send their own reporters to cover the events. You’ll remember our feature on Highway Africa and our training of journalists last September - glad to see that the work has payed off :)

It doesn’t look as though the article is online yet, but there was a great piece entitled ‘A seamstress and a licence’ about the applicability of Creative Commons in African countries. Congratulations to HANA on their decision to make their policies of providing open, local content a reality!
